The European Cultural Centre of Delphi, with the support of the Onassis Foundation, organized from 5 to 8 July 2018 in Delphi the tribute “The Return of Dionysos” in honour of the internationally renowned Greek director Theodoros Terzopoulos.
The name of Theodoros Terzopoulos is inextricably linked to Delphi and the European Cultural Centre of Delphi. He was the Artistic Director of the iconic Delphi International Meetings on Ancient Drama. The ATTIS Theatre was founded there in 1985. The Ancient Stadium of Delphi was the venue for the first performance of Euripides’ BACCHAE in 1986 under his direction, which in the following years had more than 400 performances in 30 countries.
Theodoros Terzopoulos returned to Delphi with Euripides’ THE TROJAN WOMEN at the Ancient Theatre of Delphi on 6 and 7 July. Despina Bebedeli in the role of Hecuba. Eleven actors from six countries and six Cassandras, coming from divided cities, participated.
The performance is a production of the “Pafos European Capital of Culture 2017” and was first presented on 7 & 8 July 2017 at the Ancient Conservatory of Pafos.
The performance of Delphi was produced in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Phokis, in the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
Apart from the performance, the tribute included :
– An international symposium on “The Return of Dionysos: from the Bacchae to the Trojan Women”.
